The subcutaneous layer is the innermost layer of the skin. This layer is composed mostly of adipose and some connective tissue. The fatty layer anchors the skin to underlying structures such as muscles and allows it skin to move freely over those structures. It may also act as a shock absorber and insulation for the deeper tissues.
