Taking Control
Watch the UV Index

Watch the UV index for your area. The National Weather Service uses a computer model to calculate the next day’s UV levels for a number of cities across the United States. It takes into account several factors such as the amount of ozone and cloud cover, latitude, elevation, and time of the year. The index number is provided in a 0 to 10+ scale indicating the expected level of exposure to UV radiation. The scale is:

Index Number Exposure Level
Less than 2 Low
3 to 45 Moderate
6 to 7 High
8 to 10 Very High
11+ Extreme

Precautions should always be taken to reduce UV exposure and especially when in the moderate or higher range. This index is NOT intended for use by sun-sensitive individuals. Sun-sensitive individuals should always consult their doctor about the proper precautions to take.
